Scale the Hutch: Run a Commercial Rabbitry for Meat & Breeding Stock
Build a welfare-first, records-driven commercial rabbitry for meat and breeding stock. Capacity-building, not veterinary, legal or financial advice; keep the animals well, biosecure, sell honestly, and a viable business and income are never guaranteed.

What you'll gain
A commercial rabbitry breeds and raises rabbits at scale for two revenue streams — meat, and healthy, well-recorded breeding stock sold to other farmers — with by-products such as prized manure fertiliser on the side. Rabbits are attractive because they are prolific, efficient converters of forage, and need less space and capital than cattle or pigs. This course is an honest playbook for running one, and it is clear from the first line: this is business capacity-building, and it is NOT veterinary, animal-health, legal or financial advice, and NOT a guarantee of a viable business, income or production outcome. It rests on one fact that governs everything: rabbits are fragile, stress-sensitive animals whose productivity collapses the moment welfare, hygiene or nutrition slips — the herd is the asset, and it is easily destroyed. From that come the two bright lines. The first is welfare and health first, with biosecurity always: you keep rabbits humanely and healthily — real space rather than overcrowding, clean, dry, ventilated and shaded housing, protection from heat, predators and damp, constant clean water, correct stage-appropriate nutrition, and gentle handling — because welfare is not a soft extra, it is the production system; and you quarantine new stock, isolate the sick, keep everything clean, and work with a qualified vet, who diagnoses and prescribes while you observe and prevent. Breeding is managed, not maximised — does are rested and retired humanely, never bred to death — and slaughter, when done, is humane and follows meat-hygiene rules. The second bright line is honest stock, honest records, legal and safe: you sell breeding stock with true health, age, parentage and breed from real records — a record you cannot back is a lie — you operate legally with the registrations, food-safety, movement and medicine-withdrawal rules your context requires, and you manage waste, neighbours and disease risk safely. You learn what a rabbitry is; housing, nutrition, water and welfare as one production system; managed breeding, health and the biosecurity that is the whole game; markets and honest selling; legality and safety; and how to run and scale it without multiplying its weaknesses — with no price, litter size, weight or mortality figure invented. It closes with the classic mistakes and the scams — faked "pedigree" fraud, sick-stock dumping, guaranteed-return rabbit "investment" schemes, and miracle-input cons — with a red-flag grammar and a filter. Two Nigerians travel with you: Zainab, who builds it well, and Deji, tempted by every shortcut. Where a disease, medication, food-safety rule or price could not be settled, the course tells you to confirm it live with a vet and the authorities rather than inventing it. This is capacity-building, not advice; keep the animals well and sell honestly, and a viable business and income are not guaranteed.
