What you'll gain

💧
Store water not electricity, and sell the whole system — not a pump

Nigeria irrigates barely 5% of the land it could, and the northern dry season runs six to nine months — millions of idle hectares that would grow tomato, pepper and onion if only water reached them. That gap is a business, and this course teaches you to build it as the INSTALLER, not the farmer. Built from a source-graded 2026 research pass over the technology, the unit economics, the market and its funders, the rules, and a dated failure-and-scam museum, it turns on a few hard truths. First, you are a systems integrator, not a parts seller — you sell design, supply, installation, commissioning, maintenance and agronomy, and the durable margin is the recurring service relationship, never marking up a pump. Second, the paying customer is often not the smallholder: the money sits with commercial farms and, above all, the government and donor programmes — TRIMING, SPIN, NAGS-AP, FADAMA — that buy installs at scale, so you position toward them. Third, the craft rests on three counter-intuitive facts. Solar drip needs no battery: you pump into a tank during sunlight and irrigate from the tank, because storing water costs about a tenth of storing electricity. Drip runs at low pressure (10–30 PSI), which is exactly why a modest solar pump can run it. And filtration is non-negotiable — emitter holes are a fraction of a millimetre, clogging is the number-one failure, so you match a filter to the water source and test the water first. Fourth, the costing trap that catches every beginner: the litres-per-day a pump is advertised to move is not what you will get — you must re-derive it from the real flow at the real head across the usable sun hours. You will size a system honestly for a quarter, a half and a full hectare; price a job and protect the margin against the naira by buying components per job on a deposit (the pump is ~46% of a job and import-priced); and sell the farmer the truth — about 40% more yield plus the dry-season price premium, and a payback of two to five years, not the “one season” the kit-sellers promise. It walks the real rules — no federal borehole permit outside states like Lagos, SONCAP and Form M as the true import gates, and only solar panels duty-free while pumps and pipe are not — then the install itself: survey, layout, commissioning, flushing, and the handover that saves your name by training the farmer to keep water off the controller and securing the hardware against theft. Two installers build alongside you: Ibrahim, who starts lean in Kano on about a million naira and a buy-per-job model serving co-ops, and Chioma, an agric-science graduate near Ibadan who registers a company to chase commercial and donor contracts. The honesty spine is a dated museum of how the money is really lost — the abandoned river-basin schemes, the solar theft, the counterfeit “chinko” pumps, and the agro-investment Ponzis that were ruled illegal — and a bright line a clean installer never crosses: you sell installations and service, never fixed-percentage “returns” on a solar-farm investment. Where a figure could not be verified — a contractor’s real margin, an exact duty rate, a named scam case — the course says so rather than invent it. Carry one line: size to the real water, sell service not securities, and buy per job on a deposit. Orientation and capacity-building, not engineering, legal or investment advice; every price, spec and rule is a dated snapshot to re-verify before you rely on it.

1. Orientation — the reframes that make this a business 2 lessons

Why the idle dry-season land is a business, why you are a systems integrator rather than a parts seller, and why the paying customer is often not the smallholder.

  • The two reframes that save you the most money · 22 min
  • Meet Ibrahim and Chioma — your two tracks · 18 min
2. The market and who actually pays 3 lessons

The irrigation gap and the dry-season window; the funding programmes that are your biggest customer; how installers win work; and the farmer’s honest ROI that is your sales case.

  • The funding programmes and how you win work · 22 min
  • The farmer’s ROI is your honest sales case · 18 min
3. Drip technology — the craft you must master 2 lessons

The anatomy of a drip system in water-flow order, why drip is a low-pressure craft, and how to choose emitters — inline versus online, pressure-compensating versus not — to match the crop.

  • Choosing emitters and the low-pressure rule · 20 min
4. Filtration and water quality — the #1 failure 2 lessons

Emitter clogging is the number-one drip failure. How to size a filter to the emitter, how to choose the filter type by water source, and how to test the water and keep the lines flowing.

  • Why filtration is non-negotiable · 20 min
  • Test the water, then keep it flowing · 18 min
5. Solar pumping — no battery, store water 2 lessons

Why solar irrigation stores water in a tank rather than electricity in a battery, how to choose between surface and submersible and between centrifugal and helical pumps, and how to read total dynamic head.

  • Choosing the pump and reading the head · 20 min
6. Sizing without guesswork 2 lessons

How to size a system from the crop’s daily water need, the litres-per-day advertising trap that catches every beginner, and worked scoping ranges for a quarter, a half and a full hectare.
