This course builds that skill, and it is clear from the first line: this is conflict-resolution capacity-building, and it is NOT legal advice, does not make you a lawyer, and does NOT guarantee that any dispute will settle — a mediator is not a judge or an arbitrator who imposes a decision, and not a lawyer who takes a side; they help the parties reach their own voluntary agreement and never rule on who is right or advise on the law. It rests on one fact that governs everything: a mediator has no power to compel anyone, so their entire ability to help comes from being trusted by both sides as neutral — the moment they take a side, judge or advise, they stop being a mediator and the process collapses. From that come the two bright lines. The first is stay neutral and let the parties own the outcome: you are an impartial facilitator, not a decider, so you never take sides, judge who is right, pressure a party or impose a solution, and you stay strictly within the role — running the process, giving no legal advice, acting as no one's lawyer, ruling on nothing. The second is do no harm: you keep it voluntary so any party may leave, keep it confidential within honest and legal limits so people can speak openly, protect safety and fairness against intimidation or a serious power imbalance, and know your limits — referring out anything involving violence, abuse, a crime, complex legal or financial matters, or a party who cannot participate freely, rather than mediating what you should not.
