Start a medical diagnostic lab — where quality is the product

Every clinic, hospital and doctor needs one thing before they can treat with confidence: a result they can trust — and the medical diagnostic laboratory is the business that provides it. This course is the honest playbook for starting one, and it is clear from the first line: a diagnostic lab is a regulated, quality-critical healthcare business whose product is trustworthy results, and this is orientation and capacity-building — not a guarantee of a licence or profit, and not medical, laboratory, legal or financial advice. It never states a result, a reference range or a diagnosis. You learn what a lab is and how it is regulated — that in Nigeria the MLSCN registers laboratories and the profession — and the bright line the whole business rests on: a medical lab must be run and supervised by an appropriately qualified, registered professional (a Medical Laboratory Scientist), so an entrepreneur who is not qualified employs or partners with one and never "rents a name" without real supervision. You learn why quality is the product: the quality management system, internal quality control (running controls before you release results), external quality assessment (proving your results are right), calibration, SOPs and competent staff, with ISO 15189 accreditation as the goal; and the total testing process, where most errors are pre-analytical — the right patient, the right sample, correctly labelled. You learn that a result means nothing without the right reference range (which depends on method, instrument and population and must be validated, so the course quotes none), the equipment and the hard requirement of stable, backed-up power for analysers and the reagent cold chain, and the non-negotiable biosafety that protects staff, patients and the public. You learn the business — the models (a standalone centre, a collection centre feeding a reference lab, a hospital or a specialised lab), the test menu and turnaround, the referral relationships built on reliable results, and the honest money reality that diagnostics is capital- and quality-intensive, with reagents and quality as major recurring costs and no figure invented. It closes with the classic mistakes and the scams — unregistered labs, rented licences, counterfeit reagents and over-claimed accuracy — with a red-flag grammar and the discipline that defeats them. Two Nigerians travel with you: Amaka, a registered scientist opening her own centre, and Kunle, an entrepreneur who employs a qualified lab director. Where a fee, price, range or rule could not be fixed, the course tells you to confirm it live and to get qualified professionals and the MLSCN rather than inventing it. This is orientation and capacity-building, not a guarantee of a licence and not medical, laboratory, legal or financial advice.
