What you'll gain

Run an estate power business as a real micro-utility

“Buy a big generator, sell light, enjoy fat margins” is how most people imagine powering an estate — and it skips the two things that actually decide whether the business survives: it is a capital-intensive, regulated micro-utility, and its cost is dominated by volatile fuel. This course teaches the real business of being an embedded-power or estate-energy operator — generating, distributing, metering, billing and maintaining electricity as a service to a residential estate, a market or a cluster — and it is honest that this is not easy money. You learn the spine: reliability is the product (people pay for light that stays on, and it is earned in the daily O&M grind, not the pitch), and prepaid metering is the discipline that makes the business collect at all. You choose among the four legally-distinct models — embedded generation, mini-grid, captive power, or estate energy management — using the one question that routes your whole regulatory obligation: are you selling power to independent third parties? You learn the Electricity Act 2023 decentralised the sector to the states, so you must work out whether NERC or your state regulator governs you, and every licence threshold, fee and tariff is marked “confirm live” because the rules changed in 2026 and keep moving. You learn why fuel dominates operating cost and hybridising solar, storage and a genset to cut running hours is the master margin lever; how to size to a real load (peak vs average, a diversity factor, never summing nameplate) and certify the network before energising; and why the tariff is a tension — a cost-reflective tariff that covers your costs can exceed what residents can pay, and closing that gap, or honestly walking away, is the strategic heart of the business. You model the money with live inputs, negotiate a watertight long-tenure offtake agreement with a fuel/FX pass-through, manage a risk register full of things outside your control (fuel, FX, the DisCo, regulation), and refuse the scams the sector attracts — including the “invest for guaranteed high returns” pitch whose guarantee is itself the signature of a fraud. Two operators travel with you: Tunde, building a hybrid mini-grid for a Lagos estate, and Amina, powering a northern market. Where a threshold, fee or tariff could not be verified, the course tells you to confirm it live rather than inventing it. This is orientation and capacity-building, not legal, financial or investment advice.
