Run a compliant medicine shop — and know the real routes up

“Pay a fee and I’ll upgrade your PPMV licence to a pharmacist licence” is one of the most common offers a Nigerian medicine vendor hears — and it is a scam, because no such conversion exists. This course is written for the Patent & Proprietary Medicine Vendor — the community drug seller who is not a trained pharmacist — and it is built to protect one truth above all: a PPMV licence never becomes a pharmacist licence. It teaches what your licence actually is: a real, valuable, bounded permission (under the PCN’s S.I. 136 of 2019) to retail only the Approved Patent Medicines List in original containers — not prescription medicines, not antibiotics off the list, not injections, not compounding, not diagnosis — and why respecting that boundary, rather than quietly breaking it, is what keeps your shop off the wrong end of an enforcement seal (selling beyond scope risks a fine and sealing, and it harms real patients). You learn to tell the two regulators apart (PCN licenses the people and premises; NAFDAC registers the products), to source from registered channels instead of the open drug market, and to verify a medicine is genuine with the NAFDAC Greenbook and the Mobile Authentication Service — because a printed NAFDAC number can be faked. Then the honest heart: the three real routes forward — Path A, run a model compliant shop (a legitimate, profitable destination, where most vendors belong); Path B, open a community pharmacy by employing a PCN-registered superintendent pharmacist while you remain the owner (owner is not the same as professional-in-charge, and “renting a pharmacist’s name” is illegal); or Path C, send yourself or a family member to pharmacy school (a five-year degree, an internship and the PCN exam — at least six years, and the only way to personally hold a pharmacist licence). Each is honestly costed, every fee is a graded baseline you are told to confirm live, and the “pay-to-upgrade” myth is debunked on its own screen. Two vendors travel with you: Chidinma, building a model shop toward a future pharmacy, and Musa, who refuses a shortcut and sponsors his sister through pharmacy school. This is orientation and capacity-building, not medical, legal, tax or financial advice.
