What you'll gain
Behind every building and road is someone who answers the hardest question on a construction project — what will it cost, is it value for money, and is the money being managed properly? That person is the quantity surveyor, the industry’s cost and contract manager. This course is an honest launchpad into the profession and into building a QS consulting practice, and it is clear from the first line: quantity surveying is a regulated profession, and this is orientation and capacity-building — a launchpad, not a licence, and not professional, legal or financial advice. It does not qualify or register you. You learn what a quantity surveyor actually does — the cost and contract manager, distinct from the architect, the engineer and the builder — and the bright line the whole profession rests on: it is regulated, so in Nigeria you register with the QSRBN and belong to the NIQS, and to practise as or call yourself a registered QS you must be properly qualified and registered, never buying or faking your way in. You learn the toolkit that is the craft — cost planning and feasibility, estimating, measurement and the Bill of Quantities using a standard method of measurement, procurement and tendering, contract administration, interim valuations and payments, variations, cost control, the final account, and claims and disputes — used on both sides of the table, by the consultant protecting the client and the contractor’s QS protecting the builder. You learn why accuracy is a professional duty and integrity is the profession’s backbone, because a QS’s numbers move real money: no inflating quantities, no collusion or bid-rigging, no kickbacks, and conflicts of interest declared and managed. You learn the career path — education, training and experience, professional assessment and QSRBN registration, and continuing development — and the skills and routes the profession opens. Then you learn the consulting practice as a launchpad: the models (sole practitioner, firm, specialised), the services, the clients, how work comes through reputation and independence, professional indemnity insurance and liability, and the honest money reality with no fee or figure invented. It closes with the classic mistakes and the scams — practising unregistered, registration fixers, fake credentials, collusion and inflated bills — with a red-flag grammar and the discipline that defeats them. Two Nigerians travel with you: Chinedu, a graduate on the path to registration, and Bisi, a registered QS launching her practice. Where a fee, requirement or rule could not be fixed, the course tells you to confirm it live with QSRBN and NIQS rather than inventing it. This is orientation and capacity-building — a launchpad, not a licence, and not professional, legal or financial advice.
