Reading a Company's Annual Report Before You Buy Its Shares
Read a company's annual report before you buy its shares, so you form your own picture. Investor education, not investment advice; it recommends no security, invents no figure, and guarantees no return.

What you'll gain
A company's annual report — with its audited financial statements — is the yearly document a public company publishes about itself to its owners and the market, and learning to read it is the skill that separates investing (buying a share because you understand the business behind it) from gambling on a ticker because someone said it would go up. This course teaches an ordinary person to read and understand that report so they can form their own informed picture before buying shares. It is clear from the first line: this is financial-literacy and investor EDUCATION, and it is NOT investment, financial, tax or legal advice, and NOT a guarantee of any return — it never tells you what to buy, never recommends a security, never names a real company as an investment, and never invents a financial figure (every number in it is illustrative). It rests on one fact that governs everything: a share is a fractional ownership stake in a real business, so its long-run worth depends on that business, and the report is your primary window into it — price is what you pay, the business is what you get. From that come the two bright lines. The first is understand the business before the share, and read critically: you never buy a share you cannot explain, so before buying you read the report to understand what the company does, how it makes money, how it is really performing, and what its management and independent auditor say — not a tip or a hype video — weighting the audited numbers, notes and risks over the glossy chairman's letter. The second is education for your own judgement, never a recommendation or a guarantee: reading reduces ignorance, not risk; you can be right about the business and still lose, and price matters; you never mistake this literacy for professional advice; and you treat any guaranteed, risk-free, hot-tip or can't-lose pitch as a red flag, using a licensed professional and the regulator for real decisions. You learn what the report is; its anatomy; how to read the income statement, balance sheet and — crucially — the cash flow statement; ratios as question-openers and where price meets value; the auditor's opinion, the notes, governance and risk factors; and the classic mistakes and investment scams — pump-and-dump, guaranteed-return Ponzi schemes, hot-tip and boiler-room hustles — with a red-flag grammar and a five-question filter where any single "no" means stop. Two readers travel with you: Ada, who reads before she buys, and Kelvin, who chases tips and hype. Where a regulator, filing rule or accounting standard could not be settled, the course tells you to confirm it live with the securities regulator and a licensed professional rather than inventing it. This is education, not advice; understand the business, read critically, keep realistic expectations, and no return is guaranteed.
