Make ceramic tiles from local clay — consistent and safe

Clay under the ground can become tiles, tableware and sanitaryware — a real manufacturing business — but only if you treat it as materials science and standards, not a craft you can wish your way through. This course is an honest playbook for building a ceramics line from a local clay deposit, and it is clear from the first line: this is manufacturing and business capacity-building, and it is NOT a guarantee of output, quality, sales or income, and NOT engineering, occupational-health, food-safety or financial advice. You learn the process — dig and clean the clay, blend a body, form it, dry it, glaze it, and fire it — and the two bright lines the whole course rests on. The first is that quality and consistency are the product: you must test your clay and build a repeatable body, design for shrinkage, dry slowly, control the firing curve, and understand defects, because you cannot fake vitrification or wish away warping and lime-popping, and a tile that fails the spec is unsellable however cheaply it was made. The second is safety, food-safe glazes and honest grading: silica dust causes silicosis, an irreversible lung disease, so dust control is non-negotiable; kilns and fuel are serious hazards; glazes on anything that touches food must be food-safe, because lead and cadmium can leach into food and poison people; and you grade and sell honestly to the standard. You learn to characterise and beneficiate local clay (and deal with the lime that pops fired surfaces weeks later); to build a body from clay, flux and filler; the forming methods (dry-pressing for tiles, throwing and casting for ware); drying, glazing and the faults that come with them; firing and the kiln, with no temperature invented — you test your body; the common defects read backwards to their causes; and how to run the business, where energy and rejects are the margin killers. It closes with the classic mistakes and the scams — miracle additives, fake factory kits, guaranteed-return schemes and cheap "food-safe" glazes — with a red-flag grammar and a five-point filter. Where a temperature, recipe or standard could not be fixed, the course tells you to test and confirm it live rather than inventing it.
